How to Clear Clutter
Do it gradually and with small steps

Wondering how to clear clutter from your environment?
In and of itself, it’s pretty simple. But it’s not always easy, a distinction worth noting. The simple part? Small steps; or, to put it another way, just do one thing. The hard part? Getting started.

So let's look at how you might go about this yourself. For example, just suppose that your closet's driving you nuts. (And lots of us can relate to that.) So, today, you decide to do something about that, starting with your shoes. And only your shoes. Here are some steps you might take:

    How to clear clutter
  • First, you get hold of three or four containers: one each for give-aways, throw-aways, and keepers. (The fourth is for garage sales, if you like to do those.)

  • Next, you gather up All your shoes (yes, every single pair) and lay them on the bed.

  • Then, you put each pair into the appropriate container.

  • Finally, you put the shoes you're keeping back in the closet (preferably organized); the throw-away shoes in the trash; and the give-away and/or sell containers in a safe place until you can deal with them (soon!).

Then you go pour yourself a glass or cup of your favorite beverage and pat yourself on the back. You've taken some visible and effective steps, and tomorrow is another day. Moreover, since you now know "how" to clear clutter, you can put yourself on a giant roll.

So much so that you decide to do a similar number on your jackets—or your skirts or trousers. Little by little, step by step, the entire closet becomes transformed. (Along with your attitude when you're trying to decide what to wear.) A huge benefit of addressing the process in this particular way is that you're far less likely to procrastinate. Why? Because you're not turning it into an ordeal.

Another Simple Solution
And there's yet another “secret weapon” for clearing clutter: the Finite Increment. The "finite increment" is a piece of jargon I've coined for a set amount of time devoted to a specific task. To see it applied to a messy desk, click on how to clear clutter. But the finite increment works equally well with a closet or even a room. So, do check it out.
